Last haul of coal from Thorncliffe drift mine in 1955
The person on the far left is Sir Harold West - one of the Directors of Newton Chambers. The person with the patterned pullover is the mine manager, Alan Levitt. The second man wearing a trilby (to the right of Alan Levitt) is Frank Fisher who was an electrical engineer. To the right of Frank is NUM president, Edgar North, and next to him in a flat cap is the pit top foreman, Frank Ellis.
George Albert North is pictured here in the correct mining clothes and a hard hat, father-in-law to Miriam North a former Ecclesfield Parish Councillor. George worked in the Thorncliffe Drift all his life and retired at the age of 72 years when the drift was closed.
