Luftwaffe map of Thorncliffe Ironworks.
This vertical aerial photograph of the Chapeltown area with the boundaries of Thorncliffe Ironworks boldly marked was found in the map room of a German air force station at the end of World War Two. Each department is numbered and identified in a key beneath the photograph. It is a bit unnerving seeing in German beside Burncross Road ‘Nach Sheffield mitte etwa 9km luftlinie’ (central Sheffield about 9 km as the crow flies)!
