Mud Gun, used to seal Tap Hole after Furnace has been Tapped
This old photograph shows Mr. Jack Hawks operating the first "Mud Gun" in use on the blast-furnace. The gun was charged with balls of clay which were fed into the hopper about half-way down the length of the gun. The gun was "fired" by compressed air, Mr. Hawks has his right hand on the "firing lever". Prior to this gun being used, balls of clay were thrown into the tapping-hole by one man whilst another man rammed them into the hole with a long bar.
