David Hunt was the hoist man and worked the hoist which elevated the ore, coke and limestone to the top of the furnace. William Windle acted as liaison between the Blast Furnace Manager and the fillers when changes had to be made in the charges to the furnace.
The remaining seven men were employed as fillers who filled the raw materials from the heaps of ore and coke from Furnace Hill Ovens in barrows. They all worked twelve hour shifts with a double shift on alternate Sundays.
