Moulders at Thorncliffe Works, 1934.

This group of moulders, almost all flat-capped, were photographed during a dinner break. They include on the front row some very young boys serving their apprenticeships. The caps were the only protection against hot metal. Hot liquid metal had to be carried from the cupola (furnace) to the moulds made in sand and then carefully poured into the mould. When cooled the castings had to be ‘fettled’ (the mould marks and sand removed).
