Thorncliffe patent cooking range from NC brochure.
In 1860 Newton Chambers acquired Chapel Furnace, later the site of the Izal factory. This foundry was to produce the famous Thorncliffe patent cooking range. The one shown here was the ‘Super Master’ combination grate. It was fitted with tiled oven doors and hearth and had ovens that ‘could be quickly heated and high enough to avoid stooping’. This range was said to be ‘capable of cooking for a household of twenty persons’!
