This dramatic photograph of Harry Yale pouring molten iron in the heavy castings department at Newton Chambers’ Thorncliffe Ironworks is by the German-born photographer Walter Nurnberg (1907-1991). After having carved out a career in advertising photography in the 1930s, Nurnberg served in the British Army during the Second World War and afterwards he became the official photographic recorder of a substantial number of great British manufacturing enterprises.
