Lych Gate at St Mary's Church, Ecclesfield
A church lych gate is so-called from the Anglo-Saxon word for a corpse. This was where the dead body entered the churchyard on its way to the church for the funeral service. This lych gate was built in memory of the village doctor, Dr Henry Hawthorn, born in 1838. At the time of the 1871 census he was living on Church Lane with his two unmarried sisters. He lived and worked in Ecclesfield for the rest of his life.
