Izal factory, Station Rd, Chapeltown, 1963.

The trade name Izal was registered by Newton Chambers in 1893. The germicidal oil was a by-product of coke-making from coal for the blast furnaces at Thorncliffe Ironworks. It became world-famous in the fight against disease and besides the famous Izal toilet paper 136 other Izal products were marketed. Work began on the factory in the 1930s but was interrupted by the war. Work resumed in 1947 with further extensions in the 1960s.
