Gibsons' shops, Chapeltown, c.1860
This is one of the earliest photographs in the C&HGA collection. The brothers Thomas and John Gibson, were described in White’s Directory for 1856 as ‘grocers, drapers and druggists’. John Gibson was the grocer/draper and Thomas Gibson’s shop was a post office and drug store. The premises had originally been the ‘truck shop’ for Newton Chambers. Until 1831 workers could be paid part of their wages in tokens that could only be exchanged for goods at a firm’s truck shop.
