He attended Warren School and later worked as a moulder at Newton Chambers before joining the RAF in 1936, reaching the rank of Sergeant (Ground Crew). He served most of the war in Alexandria. When he came home to marry Annice in 1943 he brought with him her wedding ring bought en route in Cape Town.
Annice was born in Ecclesfield on Townend Road, daughter of Arthur and Elizabeth Anne Turton. The family later moved to Greaves Road. She attended the village school and spent her working years in local service work and later at Hall and Pickles. They were married on 2 October 1943 at Ecclesfield Church with a reception at the Griffin Inn. After the war they lived on Sycamore Road where they raised three children - Jennifer, Stuart and Shirley. George was a keen gardener, winning several prizes. He was also a fisherman and opened a tackle shop on St Mary's Lane. George died in 1996 and Annice in 1991.
