Jack Jeffries and 'Owd Jack' a Thorneycroft Lorry, 1930 Vintage
It looked a black day in 1947 when 'Owd Jack' was struck and overturned by a runaway waggon whilst being loaded with scrap outside the Construction Shop. After being righted by a crane, they were preparing to tow him to his last resting place when his partner of 17 years, another Owd Jack, Mr Jack Jeffries, nonchalantly swung the starting handle, the engine coughed gently into life and together they purred away. Mr Jeffries,a driver of horses and lorries at Thorncliffe since 1903, stands proudly beside Owd Jack who was bloodied but unbowed with just a broken cab window and a splintered panel.
