Thorncliffe Rows.
These terraced rows were constructed in the 1860s to house ‘blackleg’ miners and their families during strikes and lock-outs at Newton Chambers’ collieries. There was a six month lock-out in 1866 and a seventeen month lock-out between March 1869 and August 1870. On 29 April 1869 a gang of 200 striking miners attacked the cottages, smashed windows and caused the small police contingent to go into hiding. The rows were demolished in the 1960s.
