Girls' pre-entry course, Thorncliffe Works, 1948.
From 1943 young female typists were trained in the Works College. After a pre-entry fortnight when they were given talks and shown around all the departments, the girls were attached to an office but continued to spend mornings or afternoons at the college. In charge was Miss Berry who was stickler for detail. She impressed upon her charges that their work and their appearance reflected on the company. Her first words on entering the classroom was ‘Open the windows! Take off your cardigans!’.
