Newton Chambers Ltd, Works canteen
Except for a short period in the 1860s and 1870s when the company was at loggerheads with its coal mining employees which led to an eighteen month lock-out and the employment of ‘blackleg’ labour, Newton Chambers were regarded by their staff as caring employers who provided a wide range of social and cultural activities and excellent rest and recuperation facilities. The walls of the works canteen were decorated with paintings by a well-known artist.
