Thorncliffe Ironworks from the blast furnace.
This shot was taken from the top of the blast furnace in 1933. Mr Ellam started work in the fitting shop at the age of 14 in 1927. He then became a draughtsman and worked for the firm until 1943. What is clear from the photograph is the internal network of railway lines by which raw materials such as coal, iron ore and limestone were assembled, and partly finished and finished products were transported around and off the site.
