'Mortomley' locomotive at Thorncliffe Ironworks.
Pictured here is just one of the locomotives used to pull and shunt raw materials and partly-finished and finished products around the works. Each had a local name: Mortomley, Tankersley, Hoyland, for example. This locomotive was built by Hudswell Clarke & Co Ltd of Leeds in 1891. It was purchased by Newton Chambers in 1909 and worked for nearly 50 years until it was sold for scrap in 1955.
