'Barrowing' enactment, Newton Chambers
Pictured here is an enactment as part of the Festival of Britain celebrations in 1951 of the traditional way of dealing with a lazy worker who failed to turn up for work without reason. His workmates would black his face and tie him into a wheelbarrow. At every pond and stream they would duck him and then call at local pubs where they would pour their beer dregs all over him. Then they tipped him in the road after he had promised to work regularly in the future.
