Chapeltown Whit Monday sing at the Ten Acre.
A Whit Monday sing at the Ten Acre, Chapeltown, in the early 20th century. The banner of Mount Pleasant Sunday School can be seen in the centre of the image. The Ten Acre was an area of land enclosed by Thorncliffe Lane and Lane End. In an interview in the South Yorkshire Times Edith Smith (née Senior) recalled the Whit Sings in the Ten Acre. She recalled Mr Baldwin conducting the singing saying that ‘he wore a tall hat and at the conclusion of the service he would flourish it in the air and call for three cheers for the bandsmen’.
