William Kay and group outside the Greyhound, Ecclesfield

This photograph belonged to Vera Kay of 86 Cross Hill, Ecclesfield. It shows a group of people on what seems to be a special occasion - some of the men are wearing 'button-holes'. The gentleman holding the baby and the dog is William Kay (1860-1936), Vera Kay's grandfather. He lived at 87, High Street, Ecclesfield and was nicknamed "Flash" Kay. According to Mr. Harry Ridge, William used to play the piano at The Ball Inn, Ecclesfield and run "Kay's Sweep" - some form of gambling game? This photograph was probably taken outside the Greyhound on High Street, Ecclesfield.
