Arthur Turton of Greaves Road, Ecclesfield 1951
Mr Turton is standing beside the heaviest bell from the tower which was taken town for repair. Arthur's grandfather, Harry Turton rang the bell on his own and has his name on a tablet in the belfry to prove it. Other names on the tablet are Harry Stringer, Edmund Hemmingfield, Howarth Barlow, Jonathon Crossland, William Parker, Joseph Parker and C. Brierley.
The old oak beams which formed the framework carrying the eight bells had been damaged by death watch beetle and was to be replaced by steel structures. The Old moorings had been in use since 1617. The bells were conveyed to London for retuning. The tenor bell weighing 18 cwt carries the date 1617 and the initials for the churchwardens of that year - Gilbert Dickenson, Richard Sheircliff, John Shaw, Francis Barbar and Thos. Hanley. The 7th bell caries the initial N.D. believed to be the vicar of the parish from 1620 -1628 the rev. Nicolas Denham. Two other bells were evidently the gift of John Watts in the year 1750 and the remaining four were hung in 1845.
