Potter Hill Methodist Chapel, High Green c. 1960.
Potter Hill Methodist Chapel, High Green c. 1960. This chapel was located at the junction of Potter Hill Lane and Hague Lane. The history of Methodism in this part of High Green dates back to 1795 when meetings were held in homes and then for almost 20 years in a local barn. In 1815 the first chapel was built and in 1838 this building was erected to offer greater space. The cost was £360-16s-4d. There were originally high-boxed pews for the congregation with the pulpit in the centre and a gallery from the middle reaching almost to the roof. Underneath were two rooms where the caretaker used to live. By 1905 enough money had been raised to remove the box pews and put in different seating, a new pulpit and communion rail. In 1934 the gallery was removed, gas radiators were installed and new windows fitted. On 11th April 1965 the 150th Sunday School Anniversary was held when the preacher was Rev J. H. G. Easthope. The building was closed and demolished shortly afterwards.
