Children on Mortomley Hill early 20th century.
On the left is Furness’s sweet shop, the next shop was a boot and shoe maker’s shop run by John Turner until it was taken over by Alfred Bostwick who also had the other two shop fronts.
Alfred Bostwick owned a newsagents and stationery shop. It was later taken over by his daughters Annie Elizabeth and Lily. Over Bostwick’s shop was a billiard saloon and through the darkened entry, sometimes called the ‘Marble Arch’, was a yard containing old cottages. The area in front of these shops was used for many years as the assembly point for the congregations of the High Green church and chapels for the annual Whitsuntide sing.
