High Green Primary School & Mechanics Institute.
The foundation stone was laid by the Earl of Wharncliffe in 1842 and the school opened in 1843, as both a day school and an evening school for ‘youths engaged as miners and artisans’. The schoolmaster’s house, shown on the right, was built shortly afterwards. A contemporary report stated that it would ‘furnish a most comfortable residence for those who may have the honourable, although toilsome, task of training the rising generation’.
