Joseph Hutchinson outside Old Cart & Horses.
As the populations of Ecclesfield, Chapeltown and High Green expanded in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, so did every means to provide goods and services. Fruit and vegetables were not only available in specialist shops and the open- air market but also from travelling fruit and vegetable sellers, like Joseph Hutchinson with his horse-drawn cart. The man, second from the left behind the cart, with his black face, looks as if he has just come off shift at a local colliery.
