Hannah Ashton (nee Cooper) Born in Grenoside, 1854
Hannah had a hard childhood scrubbing floors and cellars in a butcher's shop and working in the fields to earn money. One of her brothers was drowned when the Dale Dyke Dam burst in 1864. She married Fred Ashton of Babington and then settled in High Green. She became the local midwife at High Green.
