Knur and Spell Champion, Henry Mollart

The object of this game was to hit the knur or ball as far as possible. The knur weighed about 2oz and was either made of wood or pot. The ball or knur was placed in a shallow cup (the spell) which was attached to a spring held in place by a trigger, which was released by tapping it with the hitting stick sometimes called a pummel or driver.  This was approximately six feet long with a special head measuring about four inches by three inches. Considerable skill was needed to give that precise tap so that the ball reached the required height for hitting forcefully. Knur and spell matches attracted large crowds and heavy betting.
