The tradition for handbell ringing is a long one - thought to go back to the mid-nineteenth century. It is unknown when the Ecclesfield Handbell Ringers started. At one time they used only a small set of about 60 bells which were second-hand from Grassington. By 1924, the ringers had progressed and wanted to purchase a full set of bells - about 170. These are based on the full range of a piano keyboard. The money for these was raised by public subscription and the full set was delivered in 1925.

The ringers still play today and often give demonstrations and displays.
