The Wheel, Ecclesfield
Today some people refer to The Wheel as being in Grenocide. On Wheel Lane, a little under half way between Ecclesfield and the lower part of Grenocide, The Wheel was a small hamlet that originally clustered about a water driven wheel mill. The use of the mill is unknown. The appearance hereabouts is little changed from when the photograph was taken shortly before, or after, World War Two, except that trees have now grown and matured on the open space to the right of centre. In a document dated 1161 the road is described 'as the way goes from the Church of Eglesfield (Ecclesfield) as far as the Burliestan (the Birley Stone at Whalejaw Hill).
