The station was opened in November 1854 on the line from Sheffield up the Blackburn valley to Thorncliffe, Westwood, Pilley and Worsbrough en route to Barnsley. The line through the Blackburn valley was originally a single track railway but was made into a double track in 1875. A new station was opened in 1876. The stationmaster in the 1930s was Thomas Stanley Pleasence, the father of the actor Donald Pleasence. The passenger service and the station closed 7 December 1953.
