Ernest Senior's Shop, Charlton Brook.
Ernest Senior’s shop, Charlton Brook was located at 1 Mount Road, Charlton Brook & is now a house and Ernest Senior is listed in 1935 as a grocer in the Trade Directory.
In the 1950s, it was run by Mrs Edith Brown. She is listed in a 1961 Trade Directory. There were always bottles of Tizer and Dandelion & Burdock in crates just inside & behind the counter small wooden drawers full of cotton, shoe laces, buttons, cotton handkerchiefs etc. Edith sold absolutely everything from sweets for a 1d; Fletchers' bread & cakes to nylon stockings and cotton. She lived in the back room and upstairs & ran the shop alone.
An examination of the photograph would suggest it was taken in the 1920's and shows that it sold Gunstone’s sausages, pork pies and polonies. Also on sale were groceries, sweets, tobacco and cigars.
