The Crossroads, Chapeltown.
The initial reason for the growth of a settlement at Chapeltown was its crossroads location with to the left the road leading to Huddersfield, to the right leading to Rotherham, directly in front along Station Road in the direction of Barnsley and behind the camera leading to Sheffield. The left-hand side of the photograph is dominated by the Waggon & Horses public house while on the right-hand side stands Newton Chambers former truck shop, by the 1920s, when this picture was taken, occupied by Melias grocery shop.
