St John's Church Chapeltown, interior.
The church of St John was erected in 1859-60 in the Early English style and enlarged and renovated in 1900-01. It closed in March 2000 due to subsidence. The Parochial Church Council decided it had ‘come to the end of its life’ and that it would be ‘poor stewardship to attempt to restore the church building’. Church services were moved to the Newton Hall. In fact the building has been sympathetically restored and is now a business headquarters.
