Midland Bank, Station Rd, Chapeltown.
This is a view from the crossroads looking along Station Road with the Waggon & Horses public house on the left. The three-storey building on the right is the Midland Bank, including the living quarters of the bank manager and his family. Shirley Carter (née Hammond) the bank manager’s daughter, born in 1930, remembers watching the Whitsuntide procession from her third storey bedroom window and lying in bed and hearing the miners going to and from their morning shift in their noisy clogs.
