Mr & Mrs Vernon of Warren Lane, Chapeltown, c1910.
William Vernon is notable on two accounts. It was he who blew the buzzer at Tankersley Colliery (he was the engine ‘tenter’ there) in January in 1870 to warn troops that riots were taking place on the Westwood Rows during the Thorncliffe ‘lock-out’. He hid under the floorboards when the rioters attacked the pit. His second claim to fame is that he also ran the first co-operative store in the district.
