Cowley Manor, Chapeltown.
Cowley was first mentioned in 1161 and means a woodland clearing where charcoal was made. Cowley Manor is a seventeenth century manor house built by the Earl of Shrewsbury. It replaced an earlier manor house described in a seventeenth century survey as ‘a stately castle-like house moated about’. The medieval manor house was associated with two nearby deer parks, Cowley Park and Hesley Park. Cowley Manor remains a family home.
