Butterthwaite Hamlet
The name Butterthwaite, which is of Old Norse origin, means 'woodland clearing with rich pasture'. It was for a long period not only a farming community but also a centre of manufacturing. There was a water-powered mill and various workshops, one of the specialities being gimlet making.
