St Mary's Lane Ecclesfield.

This view of St Mary’s Lane was taken more than 100 years ago. In the background  is St Mary’s church, once known as the ‘Minster of the Moors’ on account of the large parish which it once served. Ecclesfield was first recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086 and means a Christian church (eclesia) in a treeless area in an otherwise well-wooded landscape (feld).

The steep lane flanked by seventeeth century cottages that connects upper Ecclesfield with the village green and lower Ecclesfield
