Newbiggin.
The name Newbiggin is from a medieval term ‘newbigging’ meaning a new building. A ‘biggin’ is also a word used to denote a hamlet. So Newbiggin was a small medieval settlement set up much later than the main surrounding settlements. An important function of Newbiggin in the nineteenth century was the stabling of horses and ponies used by Newton Chambers in their collieries and around the ironworks at nearby Thorncliffe.
