Scarrott's Shop, High Green ( now Cone's) in the Late 1960's

The shop and flat were built in 1953 by Norman and Minnie Scarrott replacing the existing Scarrott's Stores which had been further up Wortley Road at number 106 (this is now a house). Brian and Ella Scarrott married in April 1953 and moved into the new Scarrott's Stores in 1954 after Brian left the navy.  The shop sold hardware, drapery, crockery, wallpaper and paint and was very much part of the High Green Community. Brian Scarrott was Chair of the High Green Community Association. The shop had a savings club and sometimes ran meat raffles and it was often open 24hours a day as customers would call at the back door for supplies when the shop was closed. The Scarrotts and their two daughters lived in the flat above the shop until they left home, one to be married and one to University.
