Memorial to Sir Richard Scott of Barnes Hall Located in Ecclesfield Parish Church

Sir Richard died in Ireland in July 1638 at the age of 55.  At the time he was acting as one of the Council to Thomas Wentworth, the Earl of Strafford who was Commander-in Chief there.  Scott had led an adventurous life, once falling into the hands of the Spanish Inquisition.  His fine monument, made of marble and alabaster cost £120.  The order was given for the 'best matterialls' and 'Sir Richard Scott, knight is to be maide resting on one side with his hand under his compleat armour.....every pt finished..... with God's helpe at or before Whitsuntide next in the yeare 1640 in the parish church of Ecclesfield.'  (Gatty, A. A life at one Living ,1884). It was shipped form London to Hull then by land carriage to Bawtry and it was finally brought to Ecclesfield by Mr Housley Freeman of Housley Hall, Chapeltown.
