Death of Labour stalwart

Ecclesfield Labour Party stalwart, and JP, Eva Ratcliffe, has died at the age of 90.

Mrs Ratcliffe, of Rawsons Bank, Ecclesfield, was well-known in the area, working in local politics for more than 30 years and serving on several public bodies.

 

She received the OBE in 1966 [1965] in recognition of her service to the community and a block of flats was named after her. She became a JP in 1951 and progressed to Chairman of Sheffield Juvenile Court and also the general court.

 

Mrs Ratcliffe served on Wortley Rural District Council for several years, and was chairman three times. She later became County Alderman of West Riding County Council and served for three years on Sheffield City Council. She was Labour election agent for the Penistone constituency.

 

Ecclesfield born and bred, Mrs Ratcliffe also served as chairman of the local Labour Party, president of the South Yorkshire Women's Advisory Council, and was a member of Sheffield Water Authority and the South Yorkshire Transport Committee.

 

A widow, Mrs Ratcliffe leaves one son.

The Funeral will be on Friday noon, at Hutcliffe Wood Crematorium.
