Ecclesfield United football team in the 1920s
The village supported several football teams. Ecclesfield Red Rose has a long history and for several years Ecclesfield United were prominent in the Association League. Some members of the team later played professionally. This photograph shows the Ecclesfield United team in the 1920s. Those were the days when the goalkeeper invariably sported a flat cap. The team mascot is Harry Ridge whose parents kept the Ball Inn where the photograph was taken.
