Burncross School.
Burncross School opened in January 1885 and was originally known as Burncross Board School. It cost £3,385 17s to build and equip with furniture. There were separate outbuildings to the rear consisting of ‘boys’ playshed’, ‘girls’ playshed’, privies, urinals and coal sheds. In 1885 the school consisted of two departments, the Infant Department and the Mixed Department. Both were run as separate units, each with its own headteacher. The Infant Department was at the rear of the building with the Mixed Department in the front section. The age range was then 3½ to 14 years of age.
Additions and alterations were made over the years and in 1968 the children of the then Junior School were rehoused in the the new Windmill Hill Junior School and Burncross became an Infant School. In 1978 both schools became infant and junior schools. Sadly, this impressive stone-built Board School was closed and demolished in the 1990s.
