Henry Greaves, file manufacturer.

By the beginning of the nineteenth century nailmaking in Ecclesfield was in sharp decline because machine-made nails were on the market. Nailmaking smithies were converted into file workshops and domestic file-cutting grew rapidly. In the second half of the nineteenth century hand file-cutters became the outworkers of factories that made hand-cut and machine-made files. Increasingly hand craftsmen were organised into small works. Henry Greaves, pictured here, set up his own small works, St Michael’s Works, at High Greave, Ecclesfield.
