Saturday 30th April, ‘90 Years Young’ in High Green
This is taking place in the Methodist Church schoolroom just off Wortley Road from 10.30am to 3.30pm. The chairman of the Parish Council, Cllr Mrs Sheila Constance will open the event. It will look at the changes which have taken place in the village and the domestic, working and social lives of its inhabitants. The event marks the Queen’s 90th birthday with a timeline of events. It will feature displays and a ‘fashion through the ages’ show by Heritage High Green. Jenny Bland will be bringing her History Van and transporting us back to the 1920s when Princess Elizabeth was born. There will be much more from the Archiving Project and the new website.
Thursday 2nd June, The Archiving Project – an illustrated talk
7.30pm at the Grenoside Reading Room. Christine, the project co-ordinator, will give a talk about the Ecclesfield Parish Council’s Archiving Project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. This will be illustrated with some of the material that has been donated for the digital archive and will accompany an exhibition about the project which will be at the Grenoside Reading Room through June.
Saturday 9th July: The Festival of Britain Summer Celebration Walk
In 1951, the summer long Festival of Britain celebrating the start of a new modern era had an impact on the local Ecclesfield Parish area as well as being a focal point for the whole of the UK. Planning started in 1949 with local councils and communities being given the opportunity to organise their own celebrations and festivals over the summer of 1951. As part of the Archiving Project, we have been collecting material to create a display and will be holding an event at the Grenoside Reading Room to celebrate the 65th anniversary.
The walk will start from Grenoside Reading Room at 1.30pm and we will walk to the Birley Stone and the viewing point and back to the Reading Room or refreshments. All welcome. We will be taking photos at the viewing point and along the way.
Late July: Exhibition at Ecclesfield Library
There will be an exhibition, organised by the Archiving Project, looking at the history of the library and the local area in support of Ecclesfield Community Library. It will be open to the public during Library opening hours. The exhibition is being developed at the monthly local history reminiscence sessions which take place in the Library.
Saturday 30th July: White Rose 'Yorkshire' Day at the Miners Welfare Hall, High Green
The project will be joining with other community groups on the day. I will have a display related to mining and the Thorncliffe archive material at the event where I hope we will be able to solve a few mystery locations/ industrial processes and put names to people.
Saturday 24th September, Project Celebration Event, Chapeltown venue tbc
A date for the diary. This will be a celebration of the achievements of the Archiving Project and the work of the volunteers who have contributed. It will be a chance to look at material from the displays and exhibitions as well as much more.
