William Kirk’s Handstand .

When he was 50 years old William Kirk climbed a 120-foot pylon above the Westwood area for a small wager. Once at the top he stood on his head three times! The pylon supported an aerial ropeway which conveyed 2cwt. buckets carrying coal from Rockingham Colliery to Smithy Wood Coking Plant. The ropeway was erected by Newton Chambers.
