Thorncliffe Ironworks in the mid-20th century.

A century and a half after its foundation the Thorncliffe works dominated the whole of the valley of the Blackburn Brook at Thorncliffe. The firm employed local people in a bewildering variety of jobs. They operated, at one time or another, collieries, ironstone pits, limestone quarries, coke ovens, blast furnaces, foundries, excavator plants, chemical works and bottling plants. This complex industrial enterprise was supported by wide-ranging training and welfare facilities, workers’ housing and cultural and sporting opportunities.
