The Griffin Inn, Stocks Hill, Ecclesfield.

This drawing from 1887 by W.G. Fox shows The Griffin Inn. The landlord at that time was Matthew Stringer. As already pointed out, Stocks Hill formed a busy open space that contained the village stocks. Its three sides contained a variety of commercial premises and workshops, including a butcher’s and a grocers and three public houses: The White Bear, The Tankard (later The Stocks) and The Griffin Inn.
