The Common, Ecclesfield.
As its name suggests, the Common was originally a large open space on which commoners’ sheep, cattle and horses grazed. It also contained the village pinfold where stray animals were pounded and not released until the owner paid a fine. With the expansion of industrial employment during the nineteenth century it became a mixed area of terrace houses and industrial premises dotted with shops. The one in the right foreground is Alllen’s grocery shop and the one opposite is advertising Fry’s chocolate and Virol.
